Adobe Scan alternative: what do you need to keep?
Fair Scanner is an Adobe Scan alternative for people who want simple paper-to-PDF scanning: the first 10 documents are free, followed by a one-time unlock. It has no OCR or cloud sync, so it is not a like-for-like replacement if you rely on Adobe Scan's searchable or editable text, or on automatic cloud saving.
Adobe Scan is free to download on its official US iPhone listing, which advertises OCR that makes words searchable and editable, plus automatic saving to Adobe Document Cloud. You do not need another app merely to avoid paying to download it. On iPhone or iPad, try the Notes scanner before installing a separate app. This is not a ranked list of scanner apps. Compare the workflow, not just the payment model
Adobe details below are from its US iPhone listing, not a claim that Android entitlements match. The Notes steps later in this page are for iPhone and iPad. This guide does not verify a built-in Android scanner.
| What you need | Adobe Scan | Fair Scanner |
|---|---|---|
| Turn paper into a PDF | Free to download; the listing describes scanning to PDF | First 10 documents are free and include every Fair Scanner feature |
| Search or edit words inside a scan | Listing advertises OCR that makes words searchable and editable; a subscription increases OCR capacity | No OCR or searchable PDFs |
| Automatic cloud saving | Advertises automatic saving to Adobe Document Cloud | No cloud sync |
| Several scans in one file | Combining scans into one file is an in-app purchase | No merging of separate saved documents. A multipage capture is not a documented substitute for that purchase |
| Go beyond the free download | In-app purchases add capabilities such as higher OCR capacity | One-time unlock after the first 10 documents; no subscription |

Adobe describes that combining purchase as a way to take multiple scans and consolidate them into one document. Fair Scanner's Android listing says a capture can include as many pages as you like in one go. That is a capture-session claim, not a merge tool, and it does not remove the 10-document limit. Do not treat the two descriptions as the same feature.
When Fair Scanner is a reasonable switch
Consider Fair Scanner if your usual task is to capture a paper receipt or notice, straighten the page, and share a readable PDF. Its Android listing describes edge detection, crop adjustment, photo import, capturing multiple pages in one go, and PDF export. (Android features and allowance)
For example, suppose you need to keep a roof-repair notice and send a copy to someone else. A legible PDF may be enough. If you need to find that notice later by searching for a printed word, or to edit that word, Fair Scanner's lack of OCR is a reason to keep Adobe Scan or choose another OCR-capable tool.
Look for Fair Scanner: Scan to PDF by Shikher Verma. The checked App Store listing is for iPhone, not an iPad app. You can review the scope on the Fair Scanner app page before installing.
The Android listing says the app has no account and no sign-in. That does not mean a store account is irrelevant: the same listing says a one-time purchase can be restored on a new phone with the same store account. Do not assume that purchase also unlocks the other platform.
When to keep Adobe Scan or try Notes
Keep Adobe Scan if searchable or editable scan text, or automatic cloud saving, is part of your routine. A different payment model does not replace a feature you use. The US listing describes both the OCR feature and automatic Document Cloud saving. It also says subscriptions work across Scan and Reader mobile apps and Acrobat on the web. This guide does not map every feature in that subscription, so do not switch on the assumption that only the phone scanner is affected. (Adobe's feature description)
For occasional scanning on an iPhone or iPad, try the scanner already in Notes:
- Open Notes and open or create a note.
- Tap the Attachment button, then Scan Documents.
- Position the page in view. If the device is in Auto mode, the document scans automatically.
- To capture manually, tap the Shutter button or press a Volume button. Then drag the corners so the scan fits the page, and tap Keep Scan.
- Add another scan, or tap Done.
These follow Apple's documented scanning steps. You do not need a separate third-party scanner for this capture workflow. That is not a promise that Notes matches Adobe's OCR, editing, or cloud saving.
Check one document before moving your routine
Before switching, save copies of important existing PDFs and open them where you intend to keep them. Do not assume a new scanner will import your Adobe library.
Use one ordinary document to check what you would keep and what you would lose:
- Text: Do you need to search, copy, or edit words from the page? If yes, Fair Scanner's no-OCR limit rules it out for that task.
- Storage: Do you depend on automatic cloud saving? Fair Scanner has no cloud sync.
- Output: Is a readable PDF enough, without signing or merging separate files?
For a practical Fair Scanner check, use these steps on Android:
- Capture a page or import a photo, as described in its Android listing.
- Inspect all four crop corners. Keep the entire page, including dates and small print, then apply the crop.
- Choose a cleanup mode and inspect the result. The listing describes White page, grayscale, and black and white, plus contrast and brightness. If small text becomes hard to read, try another mode before saving.
- Save the document, open it, and choose Export PDF.
- Open the resulting PDF yourself and check legibility and page completeness before discarding the paper or deleting another copy.
Limits to know before installing
Fair Scanner is not unlimited free scanning. Its first 10 documents include every feature the app has, followed by a one-time unlock. Deleting a document does not give a free document back. The listing's wording about capturing as many pages as you like in one go is not an unlimited-document promise. Check the current store price on your platform. Do not assume one purchase covers both Android and iPhone. The Android listing says you can restore that purchase on a new phone with the same store account. (Fair Scanner's allowance details)
Fair Scanner has no OCR, searchable PDFs, signing, merging, folders or cloud sync. That makes it a narrower choice than a full document-management workflow.
No cloud sync does not mean nothing is transmitted. On Android, the Google scanner component sends diagnostics and device identifiers to Google, and camera setup may require a component download. Do not assume the first launch works with no network. The same listing says saved documents are stored on the phone and can be opened offline. That applies to documents already saved, not to setup. Frequently asked questions
Is Adobe Scan free?
It is free to download. The official US iPhone listing describes scanning and OCR that makes words searchable and editable, and lists in-app purchases for added capabilities, including higher OCR capacity and combining scans into one file. Free to download is not a promise of unlimited OCR or of every paid extra. (Adobe listing)
Is Fair Scanner unlimited and free?
No. The first 10 documents include every Fair Scanner feature. After that, a one-time purchase unlocks more documents. Deleting documents does not refill the free allowance, and one purchase should not be assumed to cover both app stores. (Allowance)
Can Fair Scanner recognize or copy text?
No. Fair Scanner has no OCR. Choose an OCR-capable option if searching, copying, or editing the printed words is essential. (Fair Scanner limitations)
Does Fair Scanner require an account?
The Android listing says there is no account and no sign-in for the app. A store account is still how that listing says you restore a purchase. No app sign-in does not remove the Android diagnostic disclosure above. (Android listing)
Is there a built-in iPhone alternative?
Yes. Notes includes document scanning on iPhone and iPad. Open a note, tap Attachment, then Scan Documents, and follow the capture steps above. Those steps are not instructions for Android. (Apple Support)
Does switching transfer my scans or cancel an existing plan?
Do not assume either happens automatically. Preserve copies of important PDFs before changing your workflow, and handle any existing paid plan separately. Installing Fair Scanner is not a cancellation or refund request. The US listing says those subscriptions work across Scan, Reader, and Acrobat on the web, so a scanner switch is not a full subscription change. (Adobe listing)
Try the simpler workflow if it fits
If you need readable PDFs rather than searchable or editable text, a synced library, or Adobe's combining purchase, review the Fair Scanner app page and try the first 10 documents free:
If OCR is essential, keep that requirement ahead of the payment model.
