CamScanner vs Adobe Scan: free features, OCR and PDF choices

Adobe Scan and CamScanner both offer free basic document scanning and advertise text recognition. Choose by the features you need: Adobe explicitly lists paid scan combining and an OCR-capacity increase, while CamScanner's exact free OCR allowance is not clear from its official listings. (Adobe listing, CamScanner listing)

Adobe Scan is a reasonable starting point for basic scanning with OCR. CamScanner is also worth considering for its advertised text extraction and cross-device document access, provided you check which features your current offer includes. These recommendations use official feature descriptions, not tested scan quality or OCR accuracy. The Adobe evidence here comes from its Android listing; check the offer on your own platform.

At a glance

OCR means optical character recognition: turning pictured text into text a program can recognize. A PDF containing page images is not automatically searchable.

When Adobe Scan fits

Consider Adobe Scan if you need scanning and text recognition, and check whether its free allowance covers your task before considering an upgrade. Its listing advertises PDF and JPEG creation, OCR and automatic saving to Adobe Document Cloud. That cloud workflow is worth considering if where your documents are saved matters to you. (Adobe Scan)

The same Android listing puts a higher OCR capacity and combining scans into one file under in-app purchases. Do not read that as proof that every OCR task requires payment, or that capturing several pages is the same feature as combining separate scans.

For a specific project, check the current upgrade screen before scanning a large batch. The official description establishes an OCR-capacity upgrade, but does not clearly establish its quota period. It is not enough to promise unlimited free OCR or calculate how many pages you can process each month.

When CamScanner fits

CamScanner is a reasonable candidate if you want scanning plus its advertised text-extraction and cross-device workflow. Its US Apple listing describes multipage PDF or JPG output. Its Google Play listing advertises extracting text for searching, editing or sharing, and access to documents across devices after signing up. (Apple listing, Google Play listing)

The important distinction is between an advertised capability and a free entitlement. CamScanner advertises a subscription for access to all features, but the descriptions reviewed do not establish a precise free OCR allowance. Do not choose it on the assumption that all text extraction or every export option is free.

Both products have a free starting point. Neither should be dismissed as subscription-only. Current US subscription prices and CamScanner's exact free feature limits are not verified here, so this is not a price ranking. Check the current in-app offer on your platform, including its billing interval, rather than relying on an old price comparison.

A five-step check before choosing

Use this checklist on a non-sensitive page you own. It is a way to assess your own requirements, not a test we have performed on these competitors.

  1. Choose a useful sample. Include a heading, small print and a page number, so the page resembles what you actually need to send.
  2. Inspect the crop. Check all four edges and make sure the smallest text is readable. A missing line matters more than a polished thumbnail.
  3. Check the delivered file. Export the PDF, open it in the receiving app and verify orientation and page order. Judge the file you will send, not just the scanner preview.
  4. Verify text search if you need it. Search for a word printed inside the exported page. Finding a document by its title does not demonstrate OCR inside the PDF.
  5. Check the purchase boundary. Open the current upgrade screen before paying. Confirm that the specific function you need is included, rather than assuming that an OCR label means unlimited use.

For example, someone sending a one-page letter may only need a readable page image. Someone collecting documents for later keyword searches needs text recognition too. Those are different requirements, even though both users might ask for a “PDF scanner.”

If you only need a simple page PDF

Fair Scanner is a narrower third option, not a replacement for either app's OCR features. It has no OCR and does not create searchable PDFs. It also does not offer signing, merging, folders or cloud sync. If any of those features is essential, it is not the right substitute.

Its store listings describe page capture or photo import, crop controls and A4 or Letter PDF sharing. The first 10 documents are free with every feature, followed by a one-time unlock for unlimited documents. Deleting documents does not restore the free allowance. (Android listing, iPhone listing, product details)

A concrete example is a one-page tenants' letter: adjust its four crop corners, save the page and use the PDF export action. Our existing iPhone store captures show that crop screen, a saved letter preview and an Export PDF control. They do not demonstrate a completed export or text recognition. Before sending your own letter, open the exported file and check it using the checklist above.

Fair Scanner fits that simple page-image task. If searching the words inside the scan is essential, choose an OCR-capable product instead. On Android, scanner setup may require a component download, and Google's scanner component sends basic diagnostics and device identifiers to Google. It would be inaccurate to describe the app as involving no third-party data collection. (Android listing)

For that narrower workflow, see Fair Scanner's features and limits, or get it on Google Play or the App Store. Check your store's current purchase offer; no cross-platform purchase entitlement is promised here.

FAQ

Are CamScanner and Adobe Scan free?

Both advertise free basic scanning. That does not make every advertised feature free: Adobe lists expanded OCR capacity and scan combining under purchases, while CamScanner advertises a subscription for all features. Check the exact task and current offer, not just whether installation is free. (Adobe, CamScanner)

Does saving a scan as PDF make its text searchable?

No. PDF is a file format, not a guarantee of recognized text. If text search matters, verify it in the exported file with a word from the page. Fair Scanner has no OCR; the two comparison apps advertise it, subject to their feature limits.

Which should I choose for simple PDF sharing?

Either comparison app offers basic scanning. If you also need OCR, assess Adobe Scan or CamScanner's current limits. If you only need readable page-image PDFs and prefer a one-time unlock after a small free allowance, Fair Scanner is another option, with the limitations above.

Was this a side-by-side app test?

No. Competitor features come from official store descriptions checked November 6, 2026. We did not install or benchmark the competitors, measure OCR accuracy, or compare export speed and file size.

We make Fair Scanner and are not affiliated with CamScanner or Adobe.
