CamScanner alternatives: simple PDFs or searchable scans?

If you want straightforward PDF scans without recurring billing, Fair Scanner is a CamScanner alternative with the first 10 documents free and a one-time unlock after that. It has no OCR, so choose a searchable-scan option such as Google Drive if finding text inside scanned pages is essential.

The right replacement depends on what happens after you photograph a page. Sending a readable copy of a letter is a different job from searching hundreds of receipts or extracting text for editing.

Choose by the job you need done

Scan pages and share ordinary PDFs without a subscription Fair Scanner First 10 documents free, then a one-time unlock. No OCR, cloud sync or folders.
Save searchable scans in Google Drive Google Drive's scanning feature Searchable PDFs use the Drive storage workflow, not a local-only document library.
A free-to-download scanning app that advertises OCR Adobe Scan The publisher says OCR can make words searchable and editable. Subscriptions and extra OCR capacity are also listed. Confirm what the free download includes.
Keep the OCR and export formats you already use Stay with CamScanner if the free tier you have already covers them Its US App Store listing is free to download, with in-app purchases. Exact free allowances, and India price or availability, still need checking in your own store.

Fair Scanner's allowance and exclusions are stated on its product page. Google documents searchable scanning for both Android and iPhone/iPad.

Adobe's India Google Play listing describes Scan as a free mobile scanner app that turns photos and documents into PDF and JPEG files. The publisher advertises OCR that makes words in a scan searchable and editable. That same listing also lists in-app purchases, including subscriptions and increased OCR capacity. Check which of those text tools the free download includes.

CamScanner's official US App Store listing advertises OCR, multipage PDF/JPG scans and PDF/JPG/Word/TXT sharing. It is free to download, with in-app purchases, and the description offers subscriptions for unlimited access to all features. That does not map each advertised tool to the free tier. The US listing is a feature reference, not an India price or availability guide. Check your own store before assuming you must leave, and before assuming a feature you use today is paywalled.

This guide covers phone scanning. Fair Scanner is not an OCR or open-source substitute.

What you give up with a simple PDF scanner

A PDF can preserve a readable picture of a page without recognising its words. That distinction matters when you later want to search for an invoice number or copy a paragraph.

Fair Scanner does not provide OCR or searchable PDFs. It also does not offer signing, merging, folders or cloud sync. If any of those are part of your routine, choose a tool that explicitly supports them rather than expecting a simpler scanner to become a full document-management system.

Google Drive is worth considering when searchable scans and storage in Drive fit your workflow. Searchable PDFs do not, by themselves, mean editable Word files; check storage and usage terms separately. Adobe Scan is another OCR option to compare, but check whether the feature you need is included before committing.

A simple scan-to-PDF workflow

For an ordinary letter or receipt, use this sequence:

  1. Capture the page. Keep the whole sheet in view and use a non-sensitive sample while evaluating the app. Fair Scanner's published features include automatic edge detection, multipage capture and photo-library import.
  2. Check the crop. Move the corner handles to the page edges, checking that small notes and page numbers remain inside the boundary. Apply the crop only when all four corners look right.
  3. Adjust readability. Try the white-page, grayscale or black-and-white controls. Check brightness and contrast against faint writing rather than assuming the strongest cleanup setting is best.
  4. Save and inspect. Review each page, particularly small print and any pale marks you need to preserve.
  5. Export the PDF. Use the document's Export PDF control. Open the resulting file in the viewer or sharing destination you actually intend to use.

Published Android screenshots of Fair Scanner show crop handles and an Apply button, cleanup controls and Save, and a document preview with Add page and Export PDF. Those images show the controls. They do not show a finished export, or that every page will look the same after cleanup. The current official Android listing separately describes PDF sharing, including A4 and Letter output.

Example: a one-page tenants' letter

Suppose you need to send a readable PDF of a printed letter, not edit its text. Check that the crop includes the heading, date, signature area and bottom line. After cleanup, zoom in on the smallest print. Export the file and open it before sending.

If you instead need to find that letter months later by a word inside its body, stop at the feature decision: Fair Scanner's lack of OCR makes it the wrong fit for that requirement. A clean-looking page is not the same as searchable text.

Copy this pre-switch checklist

Use this as a short check on your own documents:

  • Keep independent exported copies of important existing documents before changing apps or deleting anything.
  • Try one non-sensitive page containing both large and small text.
  • Inspect every corner, faint mark and page number after cropping and cleanup.
  • Open the exported PDF in the intended viewer.
  • Decide whether you need text search, editable text, signing, merging, folders or sync.
  • Check the current price and terms in your own storefront before paying.
  • Handle any existing subscription separately from installing a replacement.

These are suggested checks, not claims that every app passed them. Do not assume direct CamScanner import, automatic migration or preservation of editable OCR data.

When Fair Scanner makes sense

Choose it when your requirement is straightforward scans and PDF sharing, and its missing features are genuinely unnecessary. The first 10 documents include all its features; a one-time purchase removes the document limit. Deleting documents does not restore that allowance, according to the Android listing.

Read the Fair Scanner app page for the product details, or view its current listings:

Check your storefront's purchase terms before paying. This guide does not quote an unlock price, and it does not promise that a purchase on Apple also unlocks the Google app, or the reverse. The India Google Play listing says saved documents can be opened offline. Android scanner setup may still require a component download, so this is not a promise that the first launch works with no network. Google's scanner component sends basic diagnostics and device identifiers to Google. That is not a claim that no third party receives data.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fair Scanner completely free?

No. The first 10 documents are free with all features, followed by a one-time unlock for unlimited documents. There is no subscription, but deleting old documents does not reset the free allowance.

Can Fair Scanner recognise text?

No. It has no OCR and does not create searchable PDFs. For searchable scans, Google's official Drive help documents that workflow on Android and iPhone/iPad.

Is this the open-source FairScan app?

No. This guide concerns Fair Scanner by Shikher Verma, not the unrelated FairScan app identified as org.fairscan.app. Do not choose it on the assumption that the similar name means an open-source product.

Does switching cancel my CamScanner subscription?

Do not treat switching apps as cancellation. Identify who bills you, then use that biller's cancellation route. Cancellation, refunds and deleting an app are separate matters; no refund is promised here. Export important work before switching.

Which option should I compare if I need OCR?

Start with Google Drive's documented searchable-PDF workflow or compare Adobe Scan's advertised OCR against its current paid extras. Fair Scanner is not an OCR substitute, regardless of its billing model.

Fair Scanner is a Fair Apps product. CamScanner, Google Drive and Adobe Scan are separate products; this comparison is not affiliated with or endorsed by their makers.
